Changes and Transitions

Interwebs,
I hope you all had a great holiday and are ready for 2016 to be over (because I know I for sure am)! Anyway, I wanted to put this out there to everyone and just vent about transitions and changes.
I've had a teacher, mentor, and editor for the past three years. When I first met her, I provided two short stories to her and she said to me that I am definitely a storyteller but she will help me be a writer. She was being facetious, she was actually giving me a compliment. She was saying that I can spin a good story but my grammar wasn't up to snuff, and she would help me get there. I've made two short stories with her, and completed my first, second and third draft of my first novel with her and as of today, we are no longer working with each other. We aren't parting on bad terms, but her writing career is seeing another peak (this time on the small screen) and my professional (please read occupation from 9-5 that helps pay bills) life has become hectic in the past few months.
So, now, I am working on my next project solo-dolo and initially I'm feeling a little lost. Who is going to edit me and call me on my mess-ups? Right now, I am just trying to read more and just write like normal. The editing isn't the issue. I think the real issue is that she was my first reader for so long and now... nothing! Anyway, onward and upward! Thank you for letting me vent.

Chapters, CodeCademy, and Caffeine

How are you Interwebs?!

I hope you all had a great holiday! I know that I did. What have I been up to recently, because it surely wasn't updating my blog.

Well, I have been busy at work bringing a new project to fruition for my peers, to give them a chance to get their business ideas heard by the leadership team. I dubbed it PitchFest, a name that I've taken from Twitter directly when the agents are asking for pitches. Think of my work project as SharkTank within a corporate environment.

That venture, which all-in-all took about 6 months, led me to my next professional challenge which is teaching myself how to code. To do so I am using CodeCademy, which is a really good way of learning.

That was all my boring stuff. Now, let's focus on the fun stuff: I've already written my goals out for the 2017 year and it involves a lot of writing!!!! I'm working to refocus my energies on writing and getting my craft down. This blog will be a part of that goal. I am determined to write 1,000-2,000 words a day. Hopefully all of those words will be toward The Community, because I desperately want to finish that, but if not then it will be here.

My Life Needs Organized

Hello Interwebs,

Now that the holidays are over and we're all a few pounds heavier, I've taken some time to find the holes in my writing process.

A major hurdle for me when I wrote my first novel was getting rid of distractions. I'm already a person who is easily distracted.

I mean VERY EASILY!

So, when I started new projects I moved my writing space away from the TV into a separate room. That has helped tremendously and allowed me to revise a short story, write two other short stories, create this blog and  start a new novel.

Again, all of the mentioned above accomplishments have been great, but I still feel like my time is not being properly utilized so my life is now going through an organization phase starting... TODAY.

When I leave work and get home, I approximately have five hours of productivity before I call it a night. I am going to start using every last minute to get my goals in writing and weightlifting accomplished. I am going to keep a log of how my time is spent, and in a month, I'll review my findings.

Queries and Waiting

That seems to be the norm right now. I have, so far, sent out twenty-nine queries, and out of that eleven have come back as a rejection. I haven't lost hope. After all, some of the greatest books in the last century were categorically rejected but then ended up being massive successes.

Daniel Jose Older, author of the Shadowshaper series and the Bone Street Rumba series, was  rejected 40 times for Shadowshaper before it was published, and it has received many rave reviews and made many "Must Read List". So, there is always hope, but for now, all I can do is hope and wait, and keep sending queries until someone agrees that my story would work for them.

The Community - Chapter 1

Kendra walked out onto her back patio into the cool summer night air. Inside her Chicago home, a Going Away party was being thrown for her and her husband, Isac. Although it was going well, and the halls of their home on Drexel Avenue were filled with laughter and happiness, Kendra had to escape, if only for a moment. She just needed a moment to let the reality that her last night in her house, her last night with her friends and her last night in Chicago.

It had all happened much too fast for Kendra. Only that past Monday did Isac get the phone call from TetraOil interested in buying the startup company that he and Kendra had built together; 4D-mapping software that was initially built for archeological purposes to find buried civilizations but somehow had caught the eyes of big oil companies. Quickly, that interest had turned into an offer on Tuesday, and by the end of the business day on Wednesday, Kendra and Isac were signing papers to give over their right to the company and collect a fortune.

It was a done deal, and the only thing that Kendra could say once they were left alone in the room was, “What the hell are we going to do with all this money?”

Isac smiled and simply stated, “Baby, we were just given three billion dollars. We’re going to do whatever the hell we want for the rest of our lives.”

Kendra knew he was right. Making that much money for anyone would be life-altering, and for Kendra she had never even thought it was a possibility for her. Growing up an orphan in Chicago, Kendra already felt like she was living a dream by actually making it to adulthood without any serious emotional problems and graduating from college. Meeting Isac and marrying him had been another dream, and starting her own business was the icing on the cake. She didn’t think that her life could get any better, and this came along.

She was the epitome of “rags to riches”, and it was too much, and she just needed a moment to herself.

Kendra breathed in the cool air and tried to imagine what her life would be like starting that weekend, once she and Isac had officially moved from the city. She didn’t know where they were going. Isac had said that he wanted to take Kendra some place where they could start a family. Somewhere new, and somewhere that wasn’t Chicago. Isac, too, was an orphan, but he was also a nomad. He was accustomed to living in one city for a short while before he moved on. Actually, Chicago had been the city he had lived in the longest, but only because he had found Kendra. The move would be easy for him; Kendra, not so much.

“Hey, girl,” a call from behind Kendra broke her thoughts. It was her best friend Tonya, stepping out onto the patio to join Kenya. Her high heels loudly clicked on the wood as she approached Kenya. “What are you doing out here?”

Kendra shook her head. “Just clearing my head, I guess. It’s just so much going on right now, and it is happening way too fast for me.”

“And,” Tonya said smiling. “You just became two of the richest people in Chicago, or hell, the state.” She lowered her voice as she continued. “You just got paid three billion dollars! Three billion dollars! Are you kidding me?”

Kendra smiled. “No, no! We signed a deal for that much money, but it’ll come to us in chunks for the next twenty years—”

Tonya loudly interrupted. “Who gives a shit? You will never have to worry about anything for the rest of your life. You’re not even thirty, yet, and this happened to you. This is amazing, why are you talking it down like it is something to be ashamed of? ”

“I don’t know. Things like this don’t—shouldn’t happen to people like me.”

Tonya crossed her arms over her chest, becoming annoyed. “Says who?”

“Life! I’m a black girl from Chicago with no family—”

“Watch it,” Tonya interrupted.

“You know what I mean. You know you’re family, but I’m an orphan, and somehow—”

Again, Tonya interrupted. “And somehow you’ve gotten everything you’ve deserved. You’ve earned this opportunity; don’t waste a minute of it thinking that you didn’t. And never, ever, say that you don’t have family. I am, and always will be your sister. Even when you and Isac go to the mythical Hee-Haw Community, I’m still your sister.”

Kendra laughed. “It is called the Hew Hills Community.”

Tonya laughed. “Whatever, all I know is, you and Isac were invited to live there, and they didn’t even invite Oprah.”

Kendra thought about what Tonya just said and nodded her head.

“Yes, darling, I guess you are correct. My husband and I are now a part of the elite,” she said in a fake English accent. She tapped Tonya on her shoulder. “Don’t slouch dear, that is a habit for commoners.”

The two laughed loud and hard.

Then Tonya spoke again. “I mean it, though, Kendra. You will always have me. Remember when Rico and I began to get serious, and you were worried then?”

“I was not worried!”

Tonya laughed. “Yes, you were. You thought when we got married and moved to the suburbs that you would never see me again. I caught you crying into a pint of ice cream watching Waiting to Exhale.”

“Please, get to the point,” Kendra said smiling. She remembered that day well. Tonya had come back to the city to surprise Kendra and caught her in her pajamas watching their favorite movie, and crying. They immediately started laughing together, and it didn’t take long for Kendra to realize they would be friends forever.

“The point is, we have had many life changes, and we’re still friends. We will always be friends. So, stop thinking, pack your bags and go off to the Hugh Hefner Community.”

“It’s called the Hew Hills Community,” Kendra corrected her, again.

“Well, whatever it’s called, it’s exclusive and only for the rich and elite. Go be that for a while. I’ll still be here, and you can always fly to Chicago or have a private jet pick up your best friend to fly to you.”

Kendra laughed. “I like how you just casually threw in the option of chartering a private jet for you.”

“I’ve been your best friend since high school; I think I deserve to be treated.”

Before they could continue, a man called them in from the house. It was Isac, who was happily drunk yelling for them from the dining room. “Come here, ladies, we’re doing another toast.”

Kendra and Tonya went into the house, heading toward to the dining room.

“Another one,” Kendra asked. “How many more are we going to do, tonight?”

Isac kissed Kendra and handed her a glass of champagne. “This is the last one, and the most important one.”

“Okay, well, we’re ready for it,” Kendra said.

Isac ceremoniously tapped his glass with a fork, getting the attention of the guests in the large dining room. “Everyone, let me get your attention, one more time. I just want to thank you all for coming tonight to celebrate with me and Kendra. We only invited our nearest and dearest friends, and although I’ve met most of you when I began dating Kendra, you have all accepted me as family, as you do her, and I’m so grateful.” The crowd began clapping, but Isac quickly hushed them.

“I must also, again, give a toast to the two women who have made my life so special:
my beautiful wife, Kendra, and her—our— best friend, Tonya, who introduced us, and convinced Kendra to take a chance on the cute guy who spells his name with only one ‘S’.” The crowd erupted with claps and laughter. Kendra walked over to Isac and kissed him on the lips, as the rest of the party touched their glasses together in honor of the couple.

New Story Update

Hello Interwebs,
Let me first say that 2016 has been a crappy year, but we push through, right? Currently, I a still seeking an agent. One thing that has held me back is writing a one page synopsis for the 435-page novel that I wrote. It is not easy, and I found little to no help online. Most sources that I found held the same info and also stated that it is a hard skill to learn. Hopefully, I learn that skill tomorrow. I will be working with my editor/tutor for my writing to craft a synopsis. If all goes well, it will open up my avenues for me to seek representation.

Other than that, I am working on a new story. Something smaller than the novel that I just wrote and definitely bigger than the short stories that I recently wrote, as well.

I will actually start posting full chapters, here, weekly. Starting today with Chapter 1 (following post).  I hope you all enjoy it.

If it's Not One Thing, It's Another

It seems like more and more, I'm coming on here to apologize for my absence. I've been working on my next short story, Mommy's Apple Pie, and in the duration of that venture I got a sinus infection that I'm still recovering from. Then to add some salt to an open wound, I got into an accident. My car is messed up. The other guy: his car got a dent. Luckily, no injuries! Anyway, my story is done. Now, I just need to have an e-book cover made and it's on to Amazon! Even though I got in this accident, I won't let it stop me from my dream! So Be It! So See To It!

Roald Dahl's Birthday (A Day Late)

Roald Dahl's birthday was yesterday, September 13th, and it was also my best friend's and my aunt's birthday, as well.

If you had a childhood then you are probably familiar with his work. To celebrate this author's legacy I wanted to post a quote of his that means so much and explains so much about myself:

A person is a fool to become a writer. His only compensation is absolute freedom. He has no master except his own soul, and that, I am sure, is why he does it.

Funny Authors

What I love about our modern age is that everyone has their own platforms. John Scalzi, author of Old Man's War, had a run in with some trolls and hilarity ensued!

I won't get political here, but c'mon... just... c'mon!

Updates and 808's

Blogsphere,
I am so behind on updating this because much like the weeks prior, I have been busy to my eyeballs. However, this was more family oriented. Had a sick family member and most of my time was spent on the highway going back home. Good news is that my family is doing much better and I'm back at it with my writing.

I had a short story idea that I had been working on for about two weeks and then out of nowhere I wrote myself into a corner. And yes, I had an outline! That incident aside, I still want to get a short story on Kindle before the end of next week so, I am taking a short story that I wrote as a sample before I began working with my editor and revising it. After some much needed edits, a revision and a review by my editor, I'll upload the story and will post a link here.

Also, the reason for the title of this post: I've been listening to a lot of Kanye recently. Heartbreaks and 808's and The Life of Pablo.

Anyway, I hope anyone reading this has a good day, and as always--

The Voice

As of today, my short story "The Voice" is available through Amazon! It cost .99 or free through Kindle Unlimited.

Synopsis:
After we die, where do we go? Some go to Heaven, some go to Hell, and others go somewhere entirely different. In this different place, people are given the chance to decide: Move on or, go back and try again?
After losing the love of his life, Miguel decides that his life is no longer worth living. Now, Miguel is in a strange place -- which is not exactly Heaven and not exactly Hell -- and he must decide if who he left behind are worth the effort of going back to try again.

If anyone buys/reads it, thank you and I hope you enjoy it. I look forward to any feedback!

Busy working on the next short story.

Busy Week

I've neglected my blog for a few days but I swear it was not on purpose. Where to start? First, my dog got sick (he's all good now)! Then I was working on the second draft of my short story, The Voice, and then just life.

So, what are the next plans?

That's actually what I'm trying to decide right now. My options are: Write another short story (will most likely be my choice), go into read and research mode for the next month or so, or start making the outlines of the novels/stories I want to write.

While I'm doing one of the above tasks, I will most likely update you all on the novels or short story collections I am reading, and share some of the blog posts from blogs that I like to read.

Until then,
 Keep Writing!

I Saw Suicide Squad...

...And that's pretty much all I have to say about it. I really wish they made this movie as an animated film instead.

Plans For The Summer

I work with an editor, and she's great (FYI)! She and I came up with a plan that by the end of the summer, which I'm officially marking as October 1st, to have multiple short stories completed.

Why?
One, I have to keep writing. I don't want to be one of those people who've always wanted to be a writer, write one novel, and then quit. I have way too many stories in my head that need to be put to the page.

Another reason is to build my writing résumé.

So, what exactly is the plan? That is simple: write, edit, rewrite, edit, rewrite and then post it online. I'm not sure yet if I'm going to post it here or post it somewhere else like Amazon.

The story that I am working on now is titled "The Voice". It is a short about suicide and a conversation between the main character and (possibly) God. It's discusses self-perception, knowing your life's importance to others, how your choices affect your loved ones and, ultimately, redemption.

As of right now, in the first edit round, the story is completed at 25-pages. I actually should be working on it right now, but it is hard to concentrate. First round editing is always the hardest for me, plus this story has some personal pieces in it that are hard for me to read over and over again.

Anyway, instead of continuing my procrastination, I'll get back to editing.

Keep Writing!

Querying

What exactly is querying?

Well, for me, it is when you are really proud of work that you've done but you would like to have strangers tell you that it is not good enough to even consider reading! At least that is my definition. Querying is actually a process that you go through to try to secure an agent for your work, and it is by far the most gut-wrenching thing in the process of writing thus far. Why? Because, like I said above, I am reaching out to a stranger with a brief bit of history about myself and the synopsis to my novel and hoping for the best.

So far, my hopes have been shot out of the sky!

From what I've been told, the basic query letter should go as follows:

Paragraph One: Grab the agent's attention and entice them with your story in the first paragraph. In my query, I used this, "... if you desire for books to have characters that are diverse and complicated, set against a supernatural world then my novel will be a good fit for your list."

Paragraph Two: A brief description about your novel. For example: The Son of Eden is an Urban fantasy novel about "blah, blah, blah, blah, blah!". And then end it it with, "my novel will appeal to fans of (an already published and, hopefully, successful author)" so you can show the agent that your story is marketable!

Paragraph Three/Last Paragraph: Wrap it all up in a package that tells a little bit about yourself, like: "This is my first novel, etc."

And so far, I've followed that formula and it has currently landed me six solid rejections!

That's the disheartening part of all of this. There is a stranger telling you "No" and it feels like your world is crumbling apart. Briefly... then you write another query and send it on!

Why? Because this is my dream, and I'll be damned if I'm going to stop because six people didn't want to read my work!

Keep Writing!

A New Beginning

Hello and welcome to my blog! This is a new start for me. I had a previous blog that I decided to quit. Well, actually, I just wasn't as dedicated. I was in the middle of finishing my first novel, The Son of Eden, and I just wanted all of my energy focused on that endeavor. Now, that book has been completed and I am currently on the quest to find representation for my work and actually pave a way for myself in the field of storytelling.

So, what can you expect from this blog?

Well, I'd say a lot. This entire experience is new to me. I've always wanted to be a writer but my life plans took a detour for about 13+ years. Suddenly, two years ago, I decided to pick up the pen again. I'm learning how to write, again. Coming up with a story is easy for me. I see all the characters, the setting and the ending, very quickly, but sitting down and actually creating a story full of life from start to finish is a completely new beast for me! I'll also be writing a lot about my experience querying and trying to find representation.

Also, a goal of mine is to "always write", so expect to see updates (excerpts, pictures, etc) about any short stories I may be working on at the time.

Lastly, even though I'm on this journey, I'm still (much like you) inundated with everyday life so, I will also use this space to talk about anything and everything that happens to cross my mind at the time!

Welcome!
